Edith Cavell, nurse and hero

Edith Louisa Cavell  was born in Swardeston, in Norfolk, on 4 December 1865 en died in Brussels on 12 October 1915.  She was an English nurse who was executed by the Germans during First World War in Belgium. Her last words were "Now I stay here in the sight of Our Lord end the eternity I realise that the love of fatherland is not enough. I must also feel neither hate or bitterness for who ever."

She helped many Belgians to go into clandestinity to avoid captivity and forced labour and helped British en  French soldiers to cross the Dutch border. 
Therefore she was sentenced to death by the German military authority. Her death provoked a wave of indignation abroad in 1915. 
Edith Cavell came to Brussels in 1907 where she got the position of chief nurse which was offered to her by Doctor Depage. 

She could supervise the new nursing school in Brussels. 
In those times it surprised many but when the young Belgian queen hear her arm broke and requested a nurse from this  school, this institution got a celebrity.

 When the first world war broke out, the clinic became a Red Cross hospital and Edith Cavell asked her student nurses to care for all the wounded, whatever their nationality might be. After her death, her body was brought to Westminster Abbey for a commemoration. Then she was brought to the cathedral of Norwich where she was buried.

She got for her heroic gesture, a statue in London in the neighbourhood of the National Portrait Gallery

The year after her death a 3363-meter-high mountain in the Canadian Jasper National Park was called after her name Cavell. In the residential area of Uccle in Belgium is a hospital called by her name.

Whereas in Ostende a street bears her name. By Trafalgar Square in London, a monument is devoted to her courage. After Edith Cavell's brutal death, her first name became the favorite popular for baby girls in France and Belgium.
